William Styron
So while not paying attention to class today, the prof mentioned Le Miserables, and i uncontroably exclaimed “OH YEAH” (with my arms flaring). The class laughed. I then had to very consciously refrain from shouting anything, because i know if i did, the class would have gone wild. I bit hard on that tongue of mine.
But inside I was yelling:
“This books tells the epic story of justice meeting mercy; of criminal turned good;
Le Mis. is more than a movie, it was a play; no it was more than a play, it was a book; no no, it was more than a book, it is an affair to be remembered.
In it, one can see God and Satan, strive for mastery over the hearts of men.
After reading it i have been undone. It is the closest, my soul has ever felt, to be reborn.
I couldn’t end it with a tear, it would be almost sacrilegious; and i couldn’t end it with a shout, for it was too solemn; so i ended it the best way i know how, by bowing and saying Amen.
